Questions and Answers

  • Acupuncture is an ancient healing practice originating from Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) that involves the insertion of thin needles into specific points on the body. These points are situated along pathways called meridians, through which Qi (pronounced "chee"), or vital energy, is believed to flow. According to TCM principles, disruptions or imbalances in this flow can lead to pain or illness. By inserting needles into these acupuncture points, practitioners aim to stimulate and restore the smooth flow of Qi, thereby promoting health and alleviating various physical and emotional ailments.

  • Cosmetic acupuncture offers a natural solution for rejuvenating skin by targeting fine lines, wrinkles, acne, and scars. This therapeutic technique stimulates collagen production through micro-tears, promoting skin elasticity and a smoother complexion. It also aids in proper lymphatic drainage, reducing puffiness and enhancing skin tone. This holistic approach not only enhances external beauty but also supports overall skin health for a youthful and radiant appearance.

  • During your first acupuncture treatment, you can expect a thorough consultation where the acupuncturist will review your health history and discuss your current concerns. They will then carefully place fine, sterile needles at specific points on your body, often chosen to address your symptoms or areas of imbalance. The insertion of needles is typically painless, with sensations ranging from tingling to a mild ache. Afterward, you'll relax for about 20-30 minutes with the needles in place. Many people find acupuncture sessions deeply relaxing and may experience immediate relief or a gradual improvement in their symptoms over subsequent treatments.

  • Red and blue light therapies offer targeted benefits for skin health and overall well-being. Blue light therapy is effective in treating acne by targeting acne-causing bacteria and reducing inflammation, leading to clearer skin. On the other hand, red light therapy promotes collagen production, reducing fine lines and wrinkles while improving skin texture and elasticity.

  • The number of acupuncture treatments needed varies based on individual health conditions, severity of symptoms, and overall treatment goals. Typically, a course of acupuncture may involve weekly sessions initially, with the frequency gradually decreasing as symptoms improve. Some acute conditions might see improvement after just a few sessions, while chronic issues may require ongoing treatments over several months. Your acupuncturist will tailor a treatment plan specific to your needs, assessing progress along the way to ensure optimal results and sustained wellness.

  • Acupuncture generally doesn't hurt because it uses extremely thin needles, often as fine as a strand of hair. These hair-thin needles are much finer than those used for injections, which significantly reduces any potential discomfort. Most people don’t experience any pain at all and often times don’t realize a needle has been inserted. Others experience only a slight pinch or tingling sensation when the needles are inserted, followed by a feeling of relaxation or a mild, soothing ache. Acupuncturists are trained to insert the needles gently and precisely, ensuring that the experience is as comfortable as possible while effectively targeting specific points on the body to promote healing and balance.

For those who are uncomfortable with needles, there are non-insertive acupuncture techniques available, such as magnet therapy and teishin.
